Opatija is a seaside resort on the Kvarner Bay on the Istria peninsula in northwestern Croatia. It was once a glamorous seaside resort and winter health resort of the Danube Monarchy.
In Opatija and on the Opatija Riviera numerous sports and leisure opportunities are offered. Numerous bays and the crystal clear water offer optimal conditions for diving and snorkeling. The sheltered bay of Preluka has almost no waves, but the morning wind blows Tramontana and therefore offers optimal conditions for windsurfing. The area around Opatija is also ideal for cycling and is a paradise for hiking.
Thanks to the numerous elegant villas and hotels from the imperial era as well as the extensive parks located directly by the sea, Opatija and its surroundings are well visited for tourists in every season.
In June 2007, some beaches in Opatija were awarded the Blue Flag, an environmental award for meeting strict criteria for water quality, safety standards, services and other environmental requirements.
